Overview of the Training

CAST is taught in four separate segments which are offered in-person and virtually. Each segment can be taken separately, or taken as a whole through the intensive CAST Fast Track series. Each segment of CAST training does not have to be taken in sequence, however CAST 1 is the prerequisite for the more advanced three segments of the training. All classes are taught in English.

CAST 1: The Basics

Over two days participants learn the five basic skills of coaching and come away with a ministry plan for how to use those skills in their ministry. This training is highly participatory with heavy emphasis on the integration and practice of each skill and includes a 50 page manual. The course includes the history and benefits of coaching, establishing a contact, importance of presence, deep listening, asking powerful questions, expanding possibilities, action planning, and review and commitment. This training provides 15 hours of coach specific training.
The training is co-actively led by two CAST instructors


CAST 2: Advanced Skills

This two-day training deepens the basic skills while introducing the advanced skills of coaching to denominational leaders and pastors and lay persons working to build vital congregations. This training covers laser informing, hunches and blurts and blunders, encouragement and celebrate, huge requests and challenges, metaphors and image, saboteur and future self, and the Personal Coaching Style Inventory. This training provides 15 hours of coach specific training.
The training is co-actively led by two CAST instructors


CAST 3: Group and Team Coaching

Coaching a group or a team is a specialized skill requiring the ability to combine group facilitation with coaching. Covered in this two day course are: the difference between a team and a group, stages of team life, establishing a team, the art of team coaching, and the benefits and special challenges of group coaching. This training provides 15 hours of coach specific training.
The training is co-actively led by two CAST instructors


CAST 4: Teleclasses 

In a series of eight teleclasses students dive deeper into the understanding of Appreciative Coaching, The Spirituality of Coaching, The Art of Coaching, along with the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. Each class is led “live” by an instructor, is conducted on the phone, and lasts 2 hours. This training provides 16 hours of coach specific training, and requires a total of five hours of pre-call homework.

CAST Fast Track Series 

This 62 hours of training is broken into three parts. Pre-work is done prior to the training by reading Co-Active Coaching, reflecting on the written material, and submitting answers to assigned worksheets. The main training is then offered in five consecutive days covering 34 in-person class hours with instructors. The final phase of this series is participation in 8 2-hour teleclasses. This training occurs over a five month period and is led by CAST instructors.
